Introduction to Programming, Logic,
and Design Chapter 2 Vocabulary
Questions and Answers
string literal - ANSWER-A series of characters inside double quotes that are to be
interpreted as literal text and not as an expression or name in the surrounding
statement.
user friendly - ANSWER-A program or device whose use is intuitive to people with a
nontechnical background.
assignment statement - ANSWER-sets a variable to a specified value
math operators - ANSWER-symbols used in mathematical calculations
math expression - ANSWER-performs a calculation and gives a value
operands - ANSWER-The inputs (operands) for an arithmetic operation could be
numbers, variables, or arithmetic expression.
variable declaration - ANSWER-A line of programming code that alerts the operating
system that the program needs to allocate storage space in random access memory
(RAM) for the variable.
initialization - ANSWER-An assignment that gives an initial value to a variable that
will be updated.
uninitialized variable - ANSWER-a variable that has been declared but has not been
initialized
integer division - ANSWER-an operation that divides one integer by another and
yields an integer. Integer division yields only the whole number of times that the
numerator is divisible by the denominator and discards any remainder.
internal documentation - ANSWER-System documentation that is part of the
program source code or is generated at compile time
block comments - ANSWER-start with a forward slash and an asterisk (/*) and end
with an asterisk and a forward slash (*/ ). Can appear on a line by themselves, on a
line before executable code, or on a line after executable code. Can also extend
across as many lines as needed.
external documentation - ANSWER-documentation that is outside a coded program
