Data Communication- I.T.
Define telecommunication - ANS-This is the process of using communication facilities
such as the telephone and microwave relays to send data over a far distance without
changing.
Discrete Data - ANS-This is data that can be obtained by counting. It is often called
digital data.
Eg. Girls in the class.
Analog Data - ANS-This cannot be obtained from counting. It must be measured.
Eg. Water in a beaker.
Define data communication - ANS-This is the transmission of data from one location to
the other in order to enable communication between locations. This is achieved through
the use of computers, transmission cables, satellites and wireless technology.
Define a network - ANS-This is a group of two or more computers linked together so
that they can share resources (hardware, software, data) and communicate with one
another.
Types of Networks - ANS-LAN (Local Area Network)
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
WAN (Wide Area Network)
LAN - ANS-This is made up of two or more computers connected to each other within
the same geographical area but not necessarily within the same building.
(It is used in Homes, Schools and Medium/Small sized Businesses)
MAN - ANS-This is a network that interconnects users with computer resources in a
geographic area or region larger than that covered by a LAN but smaller than the area
covered by a WAN. (It is used in University Campuses and to Connect business in a
city.)
WAN - ANS-This is a network that covers a very large geographical area. (This is used
in Large companies such as banks across the island that must be linked and for the
Internet).
