1861 – Italy becomes a nation
1870 – fully unified once Rome has been captured so the Pope only has the Vatican City
1882 – Italy joins Austria and Germany to create the Triple Alliance
1886 – Pope forbids Catholics from standing or voting in parliamentary elections
1892 – Giolitti Programme 1911 was formed
1898 – compulsory accident insurance in industrial work paid – socialists
1901 – banned children employment under 12
1902 – limited the working day for women for 11 hours – socialists
1902 – Italy signed a deal in which they would support French expansion in Morocco in return for
their support of Italian influence in Libya
1904 – Pope Pius X allowed Catholics to vote
1904 – Catholic Action
1904 – Giolitti allowed a divorce bill
1909 – Catholics were allowed to stand for election themselves
1910 – introduction of maternity fund – socialists
1911 – France consolidated its control over Morocco and Giolitti expanded expansion in Libya
1911 March – Giovanni Giolitti becomes Prime Minister for the 4th time
1911 29th September – invasion of Libya
1912 – vote given to all men who had completed military + all over 30 regardless of literacy level
1912 Oct – Turkish begun a war involving Greece, Bulgaria etc
1912 8th Oct – Turkey submitted defeat to Italy
1913 – election – catholic secretly asked liberal candidates to agree key points in return for
catholic vote - got 228/318
1913 – the socialists gained ¼ of its vote cast and achieving 32 out of 58 deputies
1914 – declaration of neutrality
1914 Spring – Giolitti replaced by Salandra
1914 June – PSI claimed strike after 3 shot during protestor in Ancona – led to red week
1914 August – WW1 began
1915 April – Treaty of London

1919 12th Sep – 2000 ex-soldiers seized the port of Fiume with D’Annunzio
1919 November – elections – Mussolini failed to be deputy
1920 – Nitti’s government fell and Giolitti returns as PM
1920 May – a new right-wing programme – declared that Catholicism could be a political force
for unity
1920 December – the Italian army stopped the seizure of Fiume
1921 January – new communist party was formed PCI
1921 May – PNF secure 7% and 35 seats including a seat for Mussolini
1921 Aug – Pact of Pacification signed
1921 18th Aug – Mussolini resigns as leader, his absence strengthened his position
1921 Oct – became a formal party PNF
1921 Nov – PNF fascists voted to support M. as leader and movement into an official party
1922 – Alberto De Stefani finance minister – pro-business measures and balance budget
1922 Jan – Cardinal Ratti becomes the new pope
1922 July – PSI and PCI called for a general strike
1922 Oct – Mussolini encouraged squads to attack conservative liberal councils in Trent and
Bolzano
1922 16th Oct – Mussolini agree a plan to takeover of Italian govt
1922 24th Oct – fascist congress in Naples – Mussolini tells supporters he will be appointed PM or
seize power
