,Course Manual | Welcome to WEconomy
The question is what direction those transformations will take. Are we moving
towards a society where sustainability becomes more important or is it the
opposite where sustainability is just a temporary ‘thing’, i.e., something that we
have now been talking about for fifty years but will soon be over? The central
assumption of this course is that these ‘slow’ trends offer the potential and
possibility to create a more sustainable and inclusive society, however, there is
governance and management needed to realize this and make it all come to
fruition.

Circular economy= an economy based on closing resource loops. Meaning
when designing a product, the recovery of materials becomes a central issue.
Bio-based economy= about the utilization of ‘applications’ already invented in
nature and now put to use in man-made processes and constructions.
Collaborative and Sharing Economy= enabling access to the ownership of
goods and services based on sharing, swapping, trading, or renting products and
services. A very diverse set of practices and related business models based on
horizontal networks and the participation of a community.
Self-production economy= about the possibility of individuals to produce the
products they need themselves, without having to buy them.
Digital transformation= the use of digital technologies to change a business
model and provide new revenue and value-producing opportunities. A step
beyond digitalization, a process that aims to improve an entity by triggering
significant changes to its properties through combinations of information,
computing, communication, and connectivity technologies.

 Literature
 Content of lectures
 Essay question:
“Together with your group, you created a Podcast on two or more trends in our
societies and economies. In this exam essay, we would like you to situate your
topic of the Podcast to a broader range of challenges and developments in
society and the economy. More specifically, we ask you to connect at least four
trends (that we discussed them in the WEconomy course) to your topic and
respond to the following question: how can we organize and govern new
business and economic models in such a way that they work within the limits of
the social and planetary boundaries of the doughnut economy? You refer to
minimally one reference of each trend taken from the obligatory readings of the
course. If you cannot connect or relate a trend (with literature reference) to your
topic of the Podcast, please give your arguments why this is not relevant for your
topic.”
