Spinal injuries are rare and caused by forceful trauma including the following

Position yourself and squeeze the arms against the head
- Lay them face up and Position yourself near the person's chest, looking
toward their head. In deep water, place your rescue tube low on your hips; in
shallow water, the rescue tube may not be necessary.

- While in the vise-grip position, apply pressure with your
outer hand to squeeze the person to your chest.
- When the person is tight against your chest, release the
grasp of your hand closest to your chest, reach over
the person, and place this hand next to your other one.
