Intercultural Communication
COMM 335
Professor Diane Carter
University of Idaho
Instructions:
Create a 400 to 800-word blog post in which you address the following:
1. How easy or difficult do you think it would be to vacation in the country you have
been studying for one to two weeks? To live in that country for one year or more?
What challenges would you expect to face in the process of adapting to the culture in
that country? Use one or two specific cultural examples from your previous blog
posts to support your claims. What can you do beginning today to make cultural
adaptation less difficult or troublesome? (See pp. 297-299, Managing Culture Shock
and Enhancing Acculturation)
2. Discuss the components of intercultural ethics as discussed on pp. 309-311 in your
text. How can you begin to internalize these ethical components so you can apply
them during future intercultural exchanges?
3. One of the obstacles to effective intercultural communication is our tendency to seek
out others with whom we share similar outlooks, habits, and traits. While it may not
be possible for you to visit the country you have been studying this semester, what
strategies can you employ to engage with your selected culture while remaining right
here in the United States?
Remember, for full points on this and all blog posts, you must provide and cite reference sources
to support your claims.
