Leadership Self-Assessment
The role of a master's prepared nurse as a leader is to provide guidance and direction to
other healthcare professionals, patients, and their families. They ensure that the highest quality of
care is provided to patients and that the healthcare team works together effectively. This paper
assesses my leadership skills as a master's prepared nurse. It will identify my leadership strengths
and weaknesses and develop a plan to improve my leadership skills.
Personal Leadership Experience
I currently hold an informal leadership position at my facility as one of the lead charge
nurses on my unit on the night shift and the unit night shift scheduler. When my manager asked
me a few years ago to become the night shift charge nurse, it was a difficult position for me to
consider. I have held the staff accountable for any issues arising during my shift, even though it
is sometimes difficult for me.
As with any leadership position, there can be times when you don’t feel like you are
doing the best job at it, and then there are times when you feel like you are doing a great job. I
feel that I have been on both ends; at times, I do well leading my team, and at other times, it can
be a struggle to feel like I am doing them justice as a leader during the shift. Most nights, I know
I am the leader I strive to be. I always make sure that they know that I am there for them front
and center when they need me as well as I always make sure before the shift ends that they are
doing okay and are on task with everything that needs to be completed before the end of the shift
is done.
I am comfortable serving as a leader in the position that I currently have. As far as any
other leadership role, I would probably not feel as comfortable as I would like until I learn the
