1.1 Research Topic: A voter apathy among South African (or
your home country) university students: a mixed-method study.
Introduction and Background As a political communication
research consultant, you have been approached by an
international youth and development organisation, Youth Vision
Society (YVS) based in Manitoba, Canada, to conduct a pilot
study of a mixed-method research approach to survey voter
apathy among South African (or your home country) university
students. You have been requested to first present a research
proposal (a research plan, which forms part of Assignment 01)
and to conduct the research pilot study (which forms part of
Assignment 03). The previous studies by Henn, Weinstein and
Forrest (2005:557) revealed that British young people generally
find “politics uninviting and irrelevant” to their lives. Another
study by Martin (2014) added revealed that Australian citizens
have little confidence in political parties in Australia. A South
African study (Oyedemi & Mahlatji 2016) notes that there is
voter apathy among the “born-frees” a generation of young
people born since 1994, who did not vote in the 2014 General
Elections. McKinley (2014) argues that this is a generation of
young people more concerned about their future in a society
characterized by high levels of poverty, mass unemployment,
violent crime, and widening inequality, rather than in the past.

, INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENT 01 With the above in
mind, you are expected to present a research proposal (a
research plan) to the Youth Vision Society (YVS), where you
highlight the following: 1.1 INTRODUCTION Briefly explain
to the reader the purpose of the study (or assignment) and what
to expect in the following sections of the study (assignment).

1.1 Introduction
This research proposal aims to explore voter apathy among
university students in South Africa (or your home country)
through a mixed-methods approach. Voter apathy, which
refers to the lack of interest, awareness, or engagement in the
electoral process, has become a significant concern in many
democracies, including South Africa. This study will examine
the factors that contribute to this phenomenon, focusing
specifically on the "born-free" generation, i.e., South African
students who were born after the end of apartheid and are now
coming of age in a complex socio-political landscape.
The purpose of this study is to understand why young South
African university students, who form a crucial voting
demographic, may be disengaged from the political process.
Previous research, such as the work of Oyedemi & Mahlatji
(2016), has shown that this generation, despite being born into a
post-apartheid era with greater political freedoms, often views
politics as irrelevant and uninviting. Additionally, societal issues
such as high unemployment, poverty, and inequality may be
influencing their disinterest in voting.
