What is a city?
- What is a city, but the people, true the people are the city.
‘’ the city is defined by the people who live in it, and what kind of specialization these people
have.
Catal Huyuk was one of the first Urban settlements found in Mesopotamia.
In order to create an urban settlement an surplus in food was necessary, this because to create an
urban settlement other work rather than sustaining yourself needed to be done. These people
needed to be fed, this can only be done when an surplus of food is created by those who
gather/hunt.
What defines an urban environment?
An Urban environment is usually defined by all sorts of density, not only density of structures but
also density of population and specialization.
What defines an urban society?
What defines an urban economy?
An urban economy is mostly recognized by how specialized it is. When there is room for
specialization there needs to be an surplus in food in order to sustain these people who specialize
themselves.
The language of cities
• Architectural styles
• Layout and design of the city
• Population developments
• Economic developments
• Societal developments
• Trade relations
• Technological change
• Shifting priorities
• Power structures
Why do we plan (cities) ?
1. Security
a. Nature reasons → hurricanes, flooding
b. Human reasons → pollution, overcrowded places
2. Effective use & protection of natural recourses
a. Effective use of land to prevent soil Exhaustions
3. Public utilities & services
a. Roads
b. Parks
4. Economic Vitality
a. Creates places for innovation
, 5. Supporting wellbeing
a. Make people meet other people (fight loneliness)
b. Increase in social activities
What is planning about?
Planning is about the organisation, regulation and control of present and future land use.
A creation of strategies to address collective concerns
Planning is writing the city
• Spatial planning includes a creation of strategies to address collective concerns around
spatial issues and the quality of local and regional environments.
• Spatial planning has the ability to translate these strategies into vision, coherent actions and
means for implementation
• Spatial design (hardware) & Institutional design (orgware) are more who are involved in the
process of planning. are both important in collaboration with why we plan.
Why (dutch) planning history matters:
• Enables a better understanding of how planning works ( instruments, language, culture, etc)
• Its virtues and its limits
• Essential for future progress

What does history learn us about:

2. The virtues and limits of planning?
3. How to deal with today’s challenges?
