Hitler’s Early Years
Born in Austria-Hungary in 1889
Parents both dead by 1907
Tried to become an artist but got rejected from Vienna Art Academy
Moved to Munich
Joined German army in 1914 and worked mainly as a messenger
o Got several medals including Germany’s highest bravery
award
o Injured in Oct 1918 and was in military hospital when war
ended
Returned to Munich after war
Hitler and Politics
Hitler discovered German Workers’ Party in May 1919 after
investigating political groups
Hitler decided to attend meetings in beer halls as he agreed with its
message
o Anti-Treaty of Versailles
o Pro-German empire
Hitler hated politicians who ended the war
Hitler joined party and recruited new members through newspapers
and speeches.
o Hitler was a very good orator
Hitler persuaded party to buy a newspaper (the Munich Observer)
and soon Hitler was leader of the party
The Nazi Party is Born
Hitler designed a new flag and symbol (the swastika)
Set up private army called the Stormtroopers (SA) who wore
brown uniforms
o They protected Hitler and disrupted other parties
Changed the name to National Socialist German Workers Party
(NSDAP) or the Nazi Party
The Nazi Party grew by 2000 members from 1920 to 1921 due to
Hitler
Stormtroopers – Hitler’s brown-shirted supporters who were employed
to beat up opponents and guard meetings
Swastika – the crooked cross symbol adopted by the Nazi Party as their
emblem
