Counseling
Acculturation - ANS-
Anchoring - ANS-the tendency, in making judgments, to rely on the first piece of information
encountered or information that comes most quickly to mind
anchoring bias - ANS-a tendency to fixate on initial information, from which one then fails to
adequately adjust for subsequent information
APA defines assessment as - ANS-Any systematic method of obtaining information from
tests and other sources, used to draw inferences about characteristics of people, objects, or
programs.
Assessment - ANS-Is an umbrella term for the evaluation methods counselors use to better
understand characteristics of people, place, and things.
Assessment is beneficial in counseling becuase - ANS-It provides information for both
counselors and clients so they can understand and respond to client concerns as well as
plan and evaluate programs. Can be therapeutic. Can help clients understand both their past
and present attitudes and actions as well as their plans for the future.
bar graph - ANS-A graph that uses horizontal or vertical bars to display data
Biographical measures - ANS-
case conference - ANS-Multidisciplinary team meeting to discuss a client's status
central tendency - ANS-a measure that represents the typical response or the behavior of a
group as a whole
Common Assessment categories include - ANS-Intelligence, ability, career, and personality.
Continous variables - ANS-variables measured on some continuum, such as test scores,
age, and rank.
Correlation - ANS-A measure of the extent to which two factors vary together, and thus of
how well either factor predicts the other.
criterion referenced - ANS-A test designed to indicate how an individual performs in
comparison to a pre-established acceptable criterion, rather than the performance of other
students.
Culture-free-tests - ANS-
dependent variable - ANS-The outcome factor; the variable that may change in response to
manipulations of the independent variable. Construct affected by the independent variable;
also knon as an "outcome or response" variable.
EPE - ANS-
Evaluation methods include - ANS-Standardized tests, rating scales and observations,
interviews, classifcation techniques, and records.
extraneous variable - ANS-any aspect of the experimetal setting that must be held constant
to prevent unplanned environmental variation. a "noise" variable that impacts a dependent
variable yet is unrealted to the assessment process- also known as a confounding variable.
frequency polygon - ANS-graph of a frequency distribution that shows the number of
instances of obtained scores, usually with the data points connect by straight lines
