Objective
Collecting a plant sample
Introduction
The DNA barcoding project has the intention to better understand the range of locations that
different plant species occupy, identifying native organisms. This helps scientists keep better
track of invasive species as they spread throughout the US and understand how environmental
factors like habitat loss and climate change impact plant communities. We’re contributing to this
project by collecting plant samples around campus and identifying the species.
Materials/Methods
We went outside the biology building and collected a leaf from a bush, and then stored it inside a
ziploc bag.
Results
Conclusion
We collected the Taro, colocasia esculenta. We learned that the specimen or root vegetable is a
tropical plant grown primarily for edible corms. It is known to be one of the earliest cultivated
plants.
