IRA Pilot Briefing Exam Questions and
Answers

Describe the segments of a typical instrument approach and the purpose of each segment. - Answer-
Initial, Intermediate, Final, and Missed Approach.

1.) The purpose of the initial approach segment is to provide a method for aligning the airplane with the
approach course.

2.) The intermediate is designed primarily to position the airplane for the final descent to the airport.

3.) The final approach segment allows you to navigate safely to a point from which, if you have the
required visual references in sight, you can continue the approach to a landing.

4.) The missed approach segment is to navigate from the MAP to a point where you can attempt
another approach or continue to another airport.

What does the notation "NoPT" on an approach chart mean? - Answer-No Procedure Turn

If a standard procedure turn symbol is shown, what type of course reversals are authorized? If a
teardrop or holding pattern is shown? If no procedure turn symbol is shown? - Answer-You may reverse
course any way you desire as long as the turn is made on the same side of the approach course as the
symbol, the turn is completed within the distance specified in the profile view, and you remain within
protected airspace. When a teardrop or holding pattern is shown, you must fly the course reversal
pattern as charted.
