Why you have chosen this syllabus type:

, The right syllabus is crucial to ensuring the lesson objectives are achieved and Alberto’s
goals are successfully met. This is why I decided on a multi-syllabus approach.
I selected listening and speaking as the primary focus because Alberto specifically
mentioned these areas he needs to improve. This was also evident in his interview and
needs analysis. Alberto expressed a desire to work with authentic materials and showed an
interest in topics like the environment, humor, and current affairs. Additionally, he needs to
enhance his English skills to secure employment. He aims to improve his conversational
English not only for professional purposes but also for social situations.
A multi-syllabus lesson allows me to integrate various resources, keeping Alberto engaged
by using relevant collocations, phrases, and idioms tied to his motivations for improving
his English.
Why you have chosen the topic(s) covered:
I have chosen the topic of small talk and reviewed the syllabus for the first lesson to help
Alberto feel comfortable and establish a positive rapport between us. By discussing his
interests, I can gather valuable insights into his strengths and weaknesses.
Alberto talked about the environment and current affairs, so he is preserving these topics.
The lessons that are related to the environment (a plastic ocean) and current affairs (What
happened during the Hamas attacks on 7 October 2023) will motivate him to improve his
speaking and proper pronunciation.
I planned for one lesson to have Silly Dialogues for Listening/Reading Practice because
Alberto enjoys humor.
I also chose workspace communication so that Alberto can practice real-life work
environment indicating that he is looking for a job in the UK.
Why you have chosen this target language/skill:
I have chosen to focus primarily on listening and speaking skills because Alberto's goals
include engaging in conversations with friends, discussing environmental and current
issues, and improving his English to find a job in England. All of these objectives rely
heavily on strong listening and speaking abilities. Additionally, from observing his
interview video, he faces challenges in these areas and would benefit from further
development.
The rationale behind the structure of the course, e.g., why is it in this order?
The course is designed to meet the student's needs, offering enjoyable, well-balanced
lessons with engaging and entertaining activities that will capture Alberto's interest and
motivate him to put in his best effort. The carefully sequenced structure of the course is
designed to meet Alberto’s specific learning objectives while keeping him engaged and
motivated. Each lesson is connected thematically and builds on the skills learned in the
previous session. By starting with foundational skills, moving through topics of interest,
and culminating in practical applications relevant to his job search, the course effectively
supports Alberto in achieving his personal and professional goals. This structured approach
ensures that he not only improves his English proficiency but also gains confidence in his
ability to communicate effectively in various contexts.
