Nursing Math
Drug Calculations
Day 1
1
, Basic Math Rounding Rules
Round numbers to the nearest tenth if the number is 1
or greater (16.88 would be 16.9). (one space beyond
the decimal)
If the number is less than 1, then it should be rounded
to the nearest hundredth (0.542 would be 0.54). (two
spaces beyond the decimal)
Fractions and ratios
Fractions and ratios are reduced to their lowest terms
3:6 = 1:2 2/4 = 1/2.
Improper fractions are changed to mixed numbers.
Answers are never left as improper fractions.
EX: 3/2 =1 ½
Tablets, caplets rounded to nearest half if scored
2
,Leading and trailing zero’s
Errors are made when the decimal point is missed.
• A decimal number that is less than 1 is written with
a leading zero- for example, 0.3 and 0.0025
• There should be no trailing zero (X.0 mg) when
the answer is a whole number. Please write X mg.
Conversions and equivalents rule
• Only the approved list of equivalents will be
accepted.
• Only the approved list of abbreviations will be
accepted.
3
, Temperature conversions
Formula
C = ( F – 32) 1.8
F= ( C × 1.8) + 32
Examples:
F = (40 C × 1.8) + 32 = 104 F
C = (104 F – 32) 1.8 = 40 C
Practice: Convert the following
95 F to = C
29 C to = F
