Before attending the first lecture, I had no idea what this module was about. It was
an option module where we had to choose between the clinical and public routes,
regrettably I did not do my research. So, deciding between the two when we were
given the opportunity to switch over was difficult.
One positive of this experience is that I showed initiative after the third session to ask
my lecturer questions about the two programmes. One disadvantage is that I should
have asked about the differences in the first session, as this would have clarified my
confusion sooner. However, in order to further make sense of the situation, I asked
classmates who took the clinical module their experience. This solidified my decision
to stay with the public.
Finally, I have learned that researching the modules you choose is beneficial
because you may need to use the skills, that are taught, in upcoming endeavors.
Choosing the public route, for example, is beneficial for advice centers.
Secondly, my feelings about the lectures were the same since they were similar to
others from different modules, the tutorials were enjoyable because they were
engaging, and the training process was an adventure as it offered me an
understanding of what a lawyer is expected to do.
One positive of the experience is that you are taught to switch from one task to
another, allowing you to become flexible. The amount of focus and switch ability also
boosts resilience. Everything expected of us was all straightforward. One negative
aspect of the experience is that I wish we had talked to and included the people who
we would be making the leaflets for in the process to gain a better knowledge of their
needs.
What I learned in this module when it comes to research is, when looking for an
answer to a question, such as why discrimination against women in the workplace
continues, online research and statistics are insufficient. You need to hear from
someone who has been the victim of the issues. In the future, I would approach
similar situations by seeking out new people to speak with about the same topics in
order to broaden my understanding on the subject.
Moreover, we were all divided into groups for this module. So, for the first task, we
split the material and researched immigration. My thoughts about the encounter
amazed me. Since I am a relatively reserved person, my teammate, however, was
friendly and told me to do whatever I could. This made me feel more at ease,
allowing me to accomplish more of what was requested of me, surprising my partner,
and earning her trust.
