BASI Pilates

10 Pilates Principles - ANS - Awareness, Balance, Control, Efficiency, Precision,
Breath, Concentration, Center, Flow, Harmony
\Abduction (joint movements) - ANS - Moving AWAY from the midline of the body
\acromioclavicular joint - ANS - Is a joint at the top of the shoulder. It is the
junction between the acromion (part of the scapula that forms the highest point of
the shoulder) and the clavicle.
\Adduction (joint movements) - ANS - Moving TOWARDS the midline of the body
\Aerobic - ANS - exercise with oxygen uptake. Oxygen uptake increases roughly
linearly with an increase in workload. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 Max.) is
defined as the highest oxygen uptake the individual can attain during physical
work while breathing at sea level. This type of exercise emphasizes
cardiovascular endurance and can be sustained for lengthy periods of time.
\Agonist (muscle role) - ANS - principle muscle in a movement. An agonist
produces an action. An antagonist blocks an action of an agonist.
\Anaerobic - ANS - exercise without oxygen uptake. Energy from the break down
of glycogen and glucose into pyruvic and lactic acid. (ex: weights and resistance)
\Anatonical position - ANS - Standing with arms down by side and palms facing
forward
\Antagonist (muscle role) - ANS - opposite muscle in action to the agonist. An
antagonist blocks an action of an agonist.
\Anterior pelvic tilt (arch) - ANS - ASIS is higher than the PS (ASIS-anterior
superior iliac spine = topmost prominent bones at the front of the pelvis)
\Anterior View - ANS - Arms at side, thumb and fingers extended, palms facing
forward
\Anterior/Ventral (anatomical direction/position) - ANS - Front side/in front of
\aponeurosis (structure of skeletal muscle) - ANS - a sheet of fibrous tissue
binding muscles together or muscle to bone
\ASIS - ANS - anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS-anterior superior iliac spine =
topmost prominent bones at the front of the pelvis). It refers to the anterior
extremity of the iliac crest of the pelvis, which provides attachment for the
inguinal ligament, the sartorius muscle, and the tensor fasciae latae.
\atlas - ANS - the 1st cervical vertebra
\Belly of a muscle (structure of skeletal muscle) - ANS - central part of a muscle
\Biceps Brachii - ANS - Upper arm muscle that causes elbow flexion. Some
muscles have more than one origin (immovable end) or insertion (movable end).
The "biceps brachii" in the upper arm, for example, has two origins. This is

, shown in its name, "biceps," which means "two heads." It is attached to the
scapula (shoulderblade) in two places and extends along the front surface of the
humerus (upper arm bone). It is inserted by means of a tendon on the largest part
of the radius (lower arm bone). When it contracts, the movable end is pulled
toward the origin, and the arm bends at the elbow.
\Biceps femoris - ANS - part of hamstrings group, flexes knee and extends thigh,
rotates thigh laterally. Is a muscle of the posterior (the back) thigh. As its name
implies, it has two parts, one of which (the long head) forms part of the
hamstrings muscle group.
\Brachialis - ANS - Is a muscle in the upper arm that flexes the elbow joint. It lies
just deep of the biceps brachii, and is a synergist that assists the biceps brachii
in flexing at the elbow.
\Cardiac Muscle - ANS - Found in the heart. It is involuntary and striated. They
give off branches and are connected in such a manner that they can function as a
single unit for contraction (functional syncytium). Cardian muscle is very
dependent on oxygen for its production of energy.
\Carpals - ANS - bones of the wrist
\Cartilaginous joint (structure of joints) - ANS - Slightly movable-sacroiliac joint
\cervical spine - ANS - neck region (C1 to C7). Are those vertebrae immediately
inferior to the skull.
\Circumduction - ANS - Combination of flexion, abduction, extension, and
adduction
\Clavicle - ANS - or collar bone is classified as a long bone that makes up part of
the shoulder girdle (pectoral girdle).
\co-contraction - ANS - contraction of the agonist and antagonist at the same time
to produce a stable joint or balanced movement
\Coccygeal - ANS - The coccyx (tailbone) is a small bone composed of four fused
pieces. Comprising three to five separate or fused vertebrae (the coccygeal
vertebrae) below the sacrum, it is attached to the sacrum by a fibrocartilaginous
joint, the sacrococcygeal symphysis, which permits limited movement between
the sacrum and the coccyx.
\coccygeus muscle - ANS - Is a muscle of the pelvic wall (i.e. peripheral to the
pelvic floor), located posterior to levator ani and anterior to the sacrospinous
ligament.
\Concentric contraction (type of isotonic contraction) - ANS - positive movement
or shortening contraction. The muscle shortens during the contraction and the
angle of the joint will decrease.
\Condyloid Joint (type of joint) - ANS - metacarpal-phalangeal/fingers. This
permits movement in two planes, allowing flexion, extension, adduction,
abduction, and circumduction.
