TCI Flashcards
2 goals of crisis intervention - ANS - Support: environmentally and emotionally to
reduce stress and risk
Teach: better ways to cope with stress
\2 Reasons Justify Physical Intervention - ANS - These 2 reasons are why a
physical intervention was necessary based on the three criteria that are given
1. the child presents an imminent risk of harm to themselves
2. the child presents an imminent risk of harm to others
\3 Criteria for Physical Intervention - ANS - These three must be met before
initiating physical intervention
1. Agency policies and state regulations approve restraint
2. The young person's ICMP indicates it
3. Our professional dynamic risk assessment indicates it
\3 errors to avoid during physical intervention - ANS - These three errors MUST
be avoided to prevent injury or death
1. Never place weight on the chest or back, never put pressure on neck, never
place head in a position where the neck can be compressed, never allow a young
person to stay in a prone or supine position once they are no longer a safety
threat
2. Never put young person's arms behind his or her back when in a prone
position, never bend a child forward in the small child or seated restraint, never
place anything over or near the face, mouth or nose that can be inhaled or
conform to the contours of the face
3. Never ignore the warning signs of asphyxia, never fail to take immediate
medical action, never restrain a child on a mattress or surface that can conform
to the contours of the face, never use these restraint techniques on a child under
five years of age
\3 goals of Emotional First Aid - ANS - 1. Provide immediate help and support to
reduce emotional intensity
2. Resolve immediate crisis
3. Keep the child in the program/activity
\3 Situations to Avoid Physical Intervention - ANS - To ensure safety avoid
physical intervention in these 3 situations
1. We cannot control the young person safely, we are in a public place
2. We are not in control or are too angry, young person has a weapon
, 3. Sexual stimulation is the motivation, young person's medical condition
prohibits it, young person has emotional problems risking retraumatization,
young person is on medication that affects his or her system
\4 Elements of a Potentially Violent Situation - ANS - 1. A potential trigger to
violence
2. A target
3. A weapon
4. Level of stress or motivation
\4 Questions when facing potential crisis - ANS - 1. What am I feeling now?
2. What does the young person feel, need or want?
3. How is the environment affecting the young person?
4. How do I best respond?
\4 Stages of the Conflict Cycle - ANS - 1. Stressful Situation/Incident
2. Young Person's Feelings
3. Young Person's Behavior
4. Adult's Response
\5 phases of the Stress Model of Crisis - ANS - 1. Pre-crisis State (baseline)
2. Triggering Event
3. Escalation Phase
4. Outburst Crisis
5. Recovery
\5 Physical Warning Signs of Danger
(during physical intervention) - ANS - 1. Goes limp and ceases to breathe
spontaneously
2. States he or she can't breathe
3. Respiration is labored, rapid or abnormal
4. Making grunting noises
5. Vomiting or turning a dusky purple color, especially of the face
\5 Predisposing Risk Factors
(during physical intervention) - ANS - 1. Obesity, Hot humid environment
2. Individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol
3. Prolonged physical agitation
4. Underlying natural disease (i.e. enlarged heart, asthma, sickle cell trait, high
blood pressure, diabetes)
5. Individuals taking certain types of medications
\7 examples of pain based behavior - ANS - 1. impulsive outburst
2.aggression
3. running away
4. self-injury
5. defiance
