Abstract
The claims made around the digital divide giving rise to ‘digital natives’ with sophisticated
technological skills and distinguished learning preferences as well as the call for radical
transformations in the education system to address their needs and interests have raised several
questions in recent times. This explorative study is thus aimed to closely examine the validity of
these claims surrounding the generational divide and investigate the urgent need for changes in
the educational system. The findings of the study showed a lack of uniformity in technology use
and adoption among young people, further weakening the grounds on which the digital divide
existed. Uneven distribution of technological skills and learning preferences was observed
among the so-called ‘digital natives’. Further, the study did not find any evidence underpinning
the disconnection in the conventional methods of learning experienced by the young generation
and revealed that the urgency to bring about drastic changes in the education system lacked
enough empirical support. The outcomes propose that the demand for transformation in the
education system needs to be treated with caution and calls for the development of plans to foster
digital literacy among students as well as evaluate the impact of different technologies on
learning.
