Firmly state the specific instructions. Tell the youth exactly what you want them to do right now. Try to make your statement short, simple, specific, and very clear. 3. Remain calm and focused on the issue. Avoid emotional reactions to the youth's inevitable defensive response. If you "take the bait" and get caught up in an emotional spiral, you'll never get through to the youth successfully. Remember, the youth has a strong need to save face. 4. Lower your own volume, keep your tone of voice unemotional, and monitor your body language. Identify the five types of resistance of youth according to the Protective Action Response Escalation Matrix. - • Verbal Resistance: refuses to comply with verbal directives; however, there is no clear and identifiable risk to safety, supervision, or security. • Passive Resistance: Youth physically refuses to comply or respond to verbal directives.
