The discussion question this week relates to the MS-DRG video recording describing
the facility reimbursement system based upon diagnosis code selection. (NOTE: Do

Grading of this discussion is 20 points and will follow the rubric outlined for the

Scenario 1:
Patient MS-DRGs are grouped into medical service categories. According to the
medical service selected, the Base MS-DRG is associated with that service. In MS-
DRGs, specific conditions are classified into three severity levels. All severity levels
are combined into one "Base" MS-DRG. A Base MS-DRG is the combination of
several MS-DRGs into one. Complication (CC) and major complication (MCC) are
differentiated within a Base MS-DRG. Base MS-DRGs do not have these CC/MCC
descriptors.
Comparisons and benchmarking can be performed by comparing side-by-side
statistics. According to the Hospital Statistics, the hospital being reported is
currently being reported. Statistical comparisons are based on national averages or
summaries of the active list. Which includes Case, CMI, CC/MCC rate.
