LO:
Discuss the three stages of bacterial metabolism
Compare and contrast fermentation, aerobic respiration and anaerobic
respiration
Describe how production of a proton gradient during bacterial metabolism
allows bacteria to undertake other essential functions
Bacterial Metabolism
Chemoorganotrophs oxidise organic molecules for energy release, also
varies in energy sources and how electron acceptors are used
Proteins, polysaccharides and lipids are broken into simple molecules and
energy is released
Nutrients are distributed down common pathways in order for enzymes to
be used efficiently
Energy released during catabolism is generated by electron movement in
ETC, negative reduction potential to positive reduction potentials
More efficient aerobic respiration
Fermentation
