● Regulation of blood flow

2. What is cardiac output and why is it important? How
is it different from Cardiac Index? Which would be
more accurate?
● Cardiac Output: the amount of blood pumped in L/min. SV x HR = CO
● Normal is 4-6 L/min
● Cardiac output is important because its the amount of blood that travels to the
organs
● Cardiac Index: it determines how precisely the CO sufficient is by factoring
body surface area (takes BP divided by weight), normal is 2.8-4.2 L/min ● Index
is more accurate
2. Define these terms.
Preload: the amount of blood to the heart (in the ventricles) at
diastole, measured by CVP, PAP (pulmonary artery occlusive
pressure) , normal 2-6
- increased in vasoconstriction
Afterload: resistance the ventricles pushes against, measured by SVR (systemic vascular
resistance, elevated is high resistance, low is little resistance), easiest is BP, PVR for left side
of heart.
Pulmonary Artery Pressure (PAP) = BP inside lungs, high=pulmonary HTN, Low = PE
Stroke Volume: the amount of blood pumped with each systolic ejection
Contractility: the force of a contraction(inotrope): beta blockers reduce contractility,
measured by CO & CI
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) : average pressure within the arterial system that is felt
by organs in the body, SBP + 2(DBP) / 3= MAP, normal is 65-70 or greater ● low MAP=
not enough blood flow traveling
