Unit 3 Assignment 2 Aleena Habib
P2: Outline how legislation, policies and procedures relating to health, safety and security in
health and social care settings.
Legislations are rules that are put in place for people to follow. This is to enable society to know
what’s deemed as plausible and what’s not. They cover all aspects in someone's life. Policy is
something that is implicated in order to follow the actions that were created by the place or
individual. Procedure is something someone does in order to follow the policy. This may be washing
their hands after following the rules.
Health and Safety Act:
The health and safety act covers the health and well-being of an individual in the uk. It provides a
basis for all other guidelines and promotes key responsibilities and duties an employee or employer
have. As well as this, people with more power like the managers and bosses have more
responsibility over the health and safety of an employee, people who work for them and visitors
during the time they are in the building until they leave. To ensure people are kept safe in the
premises, the company and employees put out guidelines that need to be followed in order to meet
it. An example of this in a health and social care setting is if an elderly person or employee was to
trip and fall, other workers need to ensure that they’re alright and no harm was done to them.
Food Safety Act:
The food safety act is put in place so no one gets food poisoning or I’ll from the food they consume
when they’re not home. Environmental health inspectors have the power to go and inspect the
food, and seize it if it doesn’t meet the guidelines if humans are unable to consume it. A must for
workers is that they have good personal hygiene however if they were not to meet this then they’d
be given a warning to meet it. If the conditions are really bad then the practise can be removed
permanently if it’s considered a health hazard to others. To prevent any hazards or allergies that
occur, the employees must ensure they have a sheet that says where they get all their food from so
they’re able to trace it back and ask if they’re unsure of what it contains.
Manual Handling Regulation:
The manual handing regulation act is put in place to ensure that all employees should try to avoid
doing it however if they were required to then there must have been a thorough plan on how to lift
and handle the object so the employee doesn’t injure themselves if they pick it up in the wrong way.
An example of this is when lifting something from the ground make sure your knees are bent so the
pressure from the object doesn’t injure your back and some of the force is diverted to your legs.
Manual handling is usually a problem for health care workers as they’re required to pick up heavy
things for people who have less mobility, sometimes the person themselves. They are required to do
this in a way that respects the individual in order for them to be the most cooperative. The handlers
must be taught beforehand on how to handle and hold people in a way which is both comfortable
for the care user and care provider.
Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations:
Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulation ensure employees report and
keep records of all accidents that occurred during the time they had worked there for 3 years. There
are a arrange of procedures that are put into place by the workplace in order to report the injuries,
diseases and incidents. The people in the workplace must have been trained and informed on how
to deal with and report injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences in the workplace. Reporting
these injuries allows the local council to learn why, where and how the risks occur as well as
