Overview
● Explain the importance of human-computer interaction
within the information technology field
● Define systems thinking
Three overlapping disciplines:
○ A discipline that is dedicated to
Information Technology -
meeting the computer needs of businesses, schools,
governments and other organizations
○ Information Systems - A discipline that involves
collecting and utilizing data to help organizations know
what information they need, how to generate it, and
how to turn it into meaningful decisions.
○ Computer Science - The study of computers and
computing concepts. In practice, computer science
deals with creating software and using computers to
solve problems.
,(HCI) Human-Computer Interaction:
● Takes into account information provided by the social and
behavioral sciences, and it considers human tendencies.
● Currently, the primary focus of HCI is the design of computer
programs and applications.
● The developer asks "How will a user interact with the
interface of a given computer program? What is its usability?"
● By studying human behavior, designers aim to create a
user-friendly and intuitive interface for their program.
● For consumers, it is clearly frustrating when figuring out how
to use a new program or piece of hardware, such as a mobile
phone, requires reading a 30-page user manual.
● With technology advancing so quickly, it would be very time
consuming to read this much every time in order to relearn
how to use a new version or an update to the software.
● An intuitive HCI is one that enables a user to quickly
understand how a device or system operates is an
advantage for the company developing it, as well as for the
individuals and businesses using it.
, Systems Thinking:
● Many, if not most, companies have IT departments or
manage the computers, networks, and other technical areas
of their businesses. Living in the information age means IT is
an important part of everyday life; it is here to stay.
● A key element used by IT departments in creating and
refining business processes and applications to benefit the
company is a concept called systems thinking.
● Systems thinking in the IT context can be defined as
understanding how different parts of IT systems work
together in the context of business processes, people , and
the organization, and how those different parts can be
changed or updated or replaced to yield different results and
benefits.
● The rate of change is constantly accelerating in IT as new
technologies are introduced and new expectations arise.
● Systems thinking is the key to keeping up with the expected
changes.
