Cell membranes and transport
Plasma Membrane
Membrane of a cell

Has certian ions come in and out of a cell if we want them to

Major lipid found in cell membrane are Phospholipids

Have hyrophobic and hydroliphic parts

Seperates outer enviornment from inner enviornment in a cell

Diffusion: there is net movement of solute from the area of higher solute
concentration to a lower solute area

The intermingling or substances by natural movement of particles

passive process can occur in water air

Osmosis: passive process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass
through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a
more concentrated one, thus equalizing the concentrations on each side of
the membrane.

Osmotic gradient: dif in concentration

Osmolyte solute:compounds that affect osmosis

Hypotonic solution: solution with a higher concentration of solutes and a
lower concentration of water than body fluids, pulls water out of cell

isotonic: normal, not affecting osmosis

Hypertonic: solution has lower concentration than inside of cell, water is
pulled into cell

Permiability: the ability to pass through the cell membrane

Hydrophilic (polar or ions) have a hard time passing through

non polar and small polar molecules have an easier/easy time passing
through
