learning and teaching, and whether it has promoted

, The Language in Education Policy (LiEP) has had a significant
influence on language learning and teaching in South Africa.
Initially, it was designed to promote multilingualism by
encouraging the use of multiple languages in educational
contexts, reflecting the country's diverse linguistic landscape.
The policy aims to support students in learning both their first
language (L1) and additional languages, which can help bridge
the gap between home language and academic language.
In practice, however, the implementation has been inconsistent.
While the LiEP advocates for multilingual education, the
dominance of English as the language of instruction in many
schools, particularly in urban areas, has overshadowed the use of
African languages in schools. This undermines the goal of
promoting multilingualism, as many learners are expected to
switch to English, which is often not their home language,
thereby making learning more challenging.
Despite these challenges, the policy has created a framework
that acknowledges the importance of home languages in
education, thereby encouraging a more inclusive approach to
language learning that values linguistic diversity. To fully
realize the goal of multilingualism, however, more investment in
training teachers, creating teaching materials in various
languages, and changing the societal attitude towards African
languages is required.
