I put all of this in a Google doc, and made the adjustments there
Exam II Study Guide Spring 2023 Biology 112 - Janech
Make sure that you GET BEYOND just memorizing definitions – I
assume that you will know them and be able to apply to real
situations!

This guide does NOT guarantee success – that is up to you and how
HARD YOU WORK to really master the material!
Mastery of the material means that it lives in your brain and you can
recall it at will. You do not need to ask anyone or look at notes or find
it on Google once you have mastered it – you really know it!!!

Your notes and your textbook should be your primary resources.
Using Google for this study guide may not help, because a search can
bring back inaccurate information, or extra information that we are
not covering.

Chap. 38 (just the parts I went over in class), Fig. 28.20 on
p. 594 in Chap 28, Chap. 38.3 p. 820-821, Timeline of
events in Angiosperm reproduction, Chap. 1.1 p. 2, Chap.
22 p. 450, p. 458-459, plus all of my examples related to
evolution, Chap. 22.2, Chap. 23.1, Chap. 23.3, Chap.
22.5, Chap. 24.1
Chap. 32.6, Chap. 51.3 p. 1107 51.5 p. 1113

(Remember good evolution videos on
www.statedclearly.com – there will not be questions over
them, but they are a good way to reinforce evolution
material and have good examples too)
(I assume that you will know basic definitions, so they are not included here)

, ● What is one advantage and one disadvantage of asexual reproduction in plants?
- Advantage: no fertilzation needed
- Disadvantage: no diversity/variation

● What are angiosperms? Why do we pay so much attention to how they reproduce?
- - Angiosperms are flowering vascular plants. They are abundant and more
plants.
● Where does the switch from vegetative to reproductive growth occur in an angiosperm?
- Shoot Apical Meristem converts from vegetative development to
reproductive development
- In flowering plants. That means creation of flowers (production controlled
by hormones)
● Be able to draw and label all parts of a perfect flower, and know all of the parts and
terms.
Carpel (female)
- Stigma: sticky,
- Style:
- Ovary: turns into fruit - eggs are located here
Stamen (male)
- Anther: produces pollen
- Filament:
Petal: whole structure is called the corolla
Sepal: whole structure is called calynx

● What is an imperfect flower? How might imperfect flowers be arranged? What are the
terms used for the different plants that have them?
○ Imperfect: missing stamen or carpel
■ It may be on the same plant (like corn)
● Monoceious = one pant will have male and female parts
■ Some may not be on the same plant (like cannabis)
● Dioecious “two houses”
● What is a nectar guide? What animals use it?
○ Bees- bright purple or yellow flowers with UV pigments
○ Bats and Moths - white, heavy scent, open at night
○ Birds- red, unscented, open during the day (hummingbirds- long beak, flowers
with long tube like petals)
● Make sure that you understand the order of events of angiosperm reproduction, from
pollination all the way to seed dispersal, and know that there are different organisms that
perform different jobs.
● What is the significance of pollen in the evolution of plants? Which plants, overall, would
need to produce more pollen, gymnosperms or angiosperms, and why? What is the
