Demonstrate nursing management of the post-operative orthopedic patient
- ANSWER-LOC, ABC, Vitals, Pain, Ins/Outs, CWMS/DVT + pedal pulses
Assess for bleeding and shock

- ANSWER-- Weight must be hang free and be properly prescribed weight
, - Linens should not lie on ropes
- Ropes should remain within pulley without fraying or looseness
- Unless there is an emergency, weights should not be removed on clients with
skeletal traction in place.
- Skeletal traction requires assessment for signs of inflammation or infection
at the entry sites of pins and needles.
- Assess circulation, pulses, and movement of extremity
- Maintain proper body alignment
Evaluate the need for interprofessional collaboration related to orthopaedic
care
- ANSWER-Orthopedic Surgeon:
-responsible for interventions regarding abnormal surgical outcomes and
medications to prescribe
Primary Nurse:
- Responsible for dressing change, dealing with unstable patients, changing
new IV site
LPN:
- Responsible for caring with stable patients only
- Reach to RN first before calling the physician. If symptoms are not relieved
from RN interventions, care is left to the physician.
