6.1 Cell Cycle

Practise Q's Done
cell cycle— highly ordered sequence of events that takes place in a cell, results in mitosis
Phases of the cell cycle
in eukaryotic cells the two main phases of the cell cycle are interphase and the mitotic
phase
Interphase— long periods of growth and normal working separate divisions
cell spends most of its time in interphase (sometimes referred to as the resting phase)
interphase is where all of the major functions such as protein synthesis occurs in
preparation for cell division
during interphase:
DNA is replicated and checked for errors in the nucleus—
protein synthesis occurs in the in the cytoplasm
mitochondria grow and divide increasing in number in the cytoplasm
chloroplasts grow and divide increasing in number in plant and algal cells
normal metabolic processes of cells occur (some, including cell respiration, also
occur throughout cell division not just during interphase
three stages of interphase:
G1— the first growth phase: organelles are duplicated
S— synthesis phase: DNA is replicated in the nucleus
G2— the second growth phase: the cell continues to increase in size, energy stores
are increased and the duplicated DNA is checked for errors
mitotic phase:
period of cell division split into two phases: mitosis and cytokinesis
mitosis— the nucleus divides
