anatomic position - Answer-Standing erect, heels together, feet pointing slightly outward, arms at the
side with palms facing forward
airplane cast (shoulder spica) - Answer-in a position of abduction; for proximal humeral fractures and
rotator cuff tears
airplane splint - Answer-removable cast or metal device used to hold the arm in abduction
baseball splint - Answer-prefabritcated and applied to the volar aspect! of the forearm and hand; the
palm portion of the splint positions the hand as if it were holding a baseball
bivalve cast - Answer-a cast that is split in half by cuts made on opposite sides of the cast to release
pressure or allow removall reapplication of the cast, such as for PT/MRI. Variations: Boston bivalve -
step-cut rather than straight line. Univalve - one side only to release pressure
Bohler splint - Answer-for spiral phalangeal fractures of the fingers; a device designed to maintain
proper position and continuous traction
, cast boot - Answer-any type of commercially available strap-on boot
cylinder cast - Answer-cast from proximal thigh to just above the ankle; for injures of the knee
Delbert cast - Answer-a short-leg cast that is trimmed away from the anterior and posterior portions of
the ankle and from the heel. This allows dorsiflexion and plantar flexion while maintaining stability.
frog splint - Answer-aluminum foram splint for finger injuries
gauntlet cast - Answer-a short cast ex ending from above or proximal to the wrist to some point in the
palm. Usually has an outrigger to control one or more digits. Used for metacarpal and phalangeal
fractures or dislocations.
Gibney bandage - Answer-strips of adhesive tape applied in alterante directions about the ankle; for
ligamentous and other injuries
gutter splint - Answer-semicircular or U-shaped splint fashioned around the injured part, usually in
metacarpal and phalangeal fractures of the ulnar side of the hand.
hairpin splint - Answer-spring-assisted splint to help gain extension in a finger injury affecting the joint
hip spica - Answer-cast incorporating the lower torso and extending to one or both lower limbs.
Variations: single hip spica, 1 1/2 hip spica, double-hip spica, Batchelor plaster; Petrie spica cast (broom-
stick)
