Orthopedic Technologist Exam: Casting,
Splinting, and Orthopedic Appliances
Muenster cast - Answer-Also called supracondylar cast. Limits supination/pronation and extension while
allowing flexion.
Serial casting - Answer-Used to decrease contractures and increase range of motion. Can be used for
Achilles tendon rupture. Cast changed every 7-10 days
Delbert cast - Answer-Short leg cast. Prevents lateral movement, allows DF/PF. Applied then trimmed
away from anterior and posterior ankle and heel.
Dehne cast - Answer-AKA three-finger spica cast: used to tx navicular fx's. Section that covers the
thumb, separate section enclosing index and middle fingers.
Gauntlet cast - Answer-A rigid cover extending from below the elbow to the proximal palmar crease,
including the thumb
Splinting a mallet finger - Answer-Extension/hyperextension splint. Alumifoam splints are superior bc
pliant. proximal IP may be left unsplinted. 6-8wks!!!
Baseball splint - Answer-TX: fx of distal phalanx
