Countertransference

Circumstances in which a psychoanalyst develops personal feelings about a client because of perceived
similarity of the client to significant people in the therapist's life.

Transference

in psychoanalysis, the patient's transfer to the analyst of emotions linked with other relationships (such
as love or hatred for a parent)

Perinatal complications

The perinatal period is after the 28 th week of pregnancy through 28 days after birth--a highly vulnerable
period for the developing brain.
Some perinatal complications:
-maternal malnutrition (poverty);
-maternal illness/infection;
-maternal substance abuse;
-physical/emotional abuse of the mother;
-psychosocial stressors on the mother; lack of oxygen for the baby during delivery... Anything that
compromises the neuro-biological development of the fetus/infant during this important time can create
a vulnerability to mental illness. This is again one of the innumerable times when good clinical social
work involves direct, concrete interventions.

Etiology of Mental Illness

Factors include complex issues, social factors, psychological factors, biological factors.

A person's strengths in each area can protect against mental illness.
