Stereoscopic: to see, what makes us see 3D

HMD: Head mounted Display, creates a fully immersive environment

AR vs. VR: Augmented reality vs Virtual Reality

1838: The stereoscope Television, 3D TV, combines two things into one, why
we can see 3D objects, two eyes work to make 1 image

1780s: Immersive panoramas

1822: 3D illusions

1929: modern jump into flight simulator, made a fake plane that was
interactive. Went on to be used to train pilots and military

1932: Brave New World, happiness vs. high art. Art is being made to make
you feel a certain way and becomes more impactful than just images on a
screen

1935: Immersive Fictional Reality, Pygmalion’s Spectacles, concept of a very
early version of VR glasses by Stanley G. Weinbaum

Telosphere mask/ Head mounted Display,

1962: Sensorama Simulator, 3D motion picture camera, smells and sounds
and vibrations and movement to create circumstances

1961: Philco Corporation develops the first real head mounted display, had
headtracking. Video broadcasted from one room to the glasses.

1962: Ivan Sutherland, the birth of CAD (through a computer you can make a
3D entity that can be represented)

1965: Ivan comes up with the concept that computers will one day be able to
control the existence of matter, sort of like 3D printing

, 1968: The sword of Damoclus, glasses use computer generated graphics into
head mounted displays, tracks head and eye movement. First augmented
reality glasses.

1969: Experience Theater; 3D pictures on the screen, speakers on each
chair, directional sound, temperature variation, seats moved. Disney hired
him

1980s: Super cock pit, Darth Vador Helmet can be controlled remotely

1987: Jeeren Lanyard, started VPL research, created gloves and head
mounted display. Helped combine elements for a fully submersive VR
experience. Created EyePhone (the head mounted display), created the data
suit

1991: Sega VR system, head mounted display with headphones and tracking,
was a flop because it didn’t feel good. Multiplayer VR, “Virtuality”

1992: Lawnmower Man, Stephen King wrote a short story, people saw it on
screen and 3D, and people get used to being introduced to VR in media. The
Cave, people can explore and experiment in a real, safe space, projections.

1995:Nintendos Virtual Boy, first portable VR

Laurels 8 characteristics: Complete surround environment, Affordances for
depth perception and motion parallax, Spatialized audio, not just stereo,
Affordances for tracking the participant’s direction of motion distinct from
the direction of gaze, The participant’s sensorium as the camera, Natural
gesture and movement, Affordances for narrative construction, The principle
of action

A horse was the first thing captured on film, because people believed horses
moved so fast that they’re feet didn’t touch the ground. It took 16 cameras.
