AC2.1 Compare campaigns for change
Campaigns are introduced for many reasons. Some examples include
changing the law, which was the purpose of Clare’s Law and Sarah’s Law.
Another purpose might be to promote anti-discrimination which was the
main aim of the Black Lives Matter Campaign. Additionally, Finn’s Law aim is
to protect those harmed by self-defense. Clare’s Law had the main aim of
changing the law so the public will have the right to go to the police if they
have a fear of someone close to them being at risk of domestic violence.
Sarah’s law was similar to Clare’s Law but instead of asking about someone's
domestic violence history this campaign focused on children’s vulnerability
and fought to give the public the right to inquire about someone who has
contact to their child or a child they know. On the other hand, BLM (Black
Lives Matter) campaign highlights racism and discrimination which black
people experience, and it helps to promote anti-racism. Finally, Finn’s Law
prevents offenders from being able to plead their innocence after injuring a
victim in ‘self-defense’.
Although all these campaigns have a strong aim for their campaigns, they all
have a different background and foundation. Clare Wood from Clare’s Law
was a lady who was killed and assaulted by her former partner George
Appleton. Clare had no way of knowing that he had a history of serial
domestic violence. After this incidence, Clare’s father, Micheal Brown
launched Clare’s Law to share her story in hope of changing the law to
protect other potential victims. Sarah’s Law was similar in the fact that her
parent (mother) set up the campaign after her daughter, Sarah Payne was
abducted and killed by a pedophile with history of committing child related
offences. Furthermore, the Black Lives Matter campaign was also a response
to a murder which the defendant was not found guilty even though he was.
This caused an eruption in the public and lead to the BLM campaign being
founded. Finn’s Law on the other hand was not founded because of a
murder. Finn is a police dog who jumped in the way of an attacker in order to
save his handler, PC David Wardell, from being stabbed. While doing so, Finn
gained very major injuries involving a cut across his stomach and a cut
across his head, whereas his handler was only left with a small cut on his
hand. After this incident happened, the offender claimed that it was self-
defense.
