Cell Membrane: A Closer Look
Membrane Molecule Function and Description
Phospholipid bilayer • 7nm thick
• Polar, hydrophillic head → polar group (commonly
Chlorine), phosphate, glycerol
• Non-polar, hydrophobic tail → two fatty acid
(hydrocarbon) chains → repel all large polar molecules
• In water Non-polar tails face inwards and the polar heads
face outwards
◦ This creates a structure that does not allow large, polar
molecules to cross it: requiring transmembrane proteins
Cholesterol (steroid) • Inner and/or Outer layer of the lipid bilayer
Molecules • Maintain membrane fluidity by limiting phospholipid
packaging
• Allows the membrane to operate in high (makes the
membrane rigid) or low (makes the membrane flexible)
temperatures
Membrane Proteins • Float within the bilayer, providing various functions
◦ Enzymes→ speed up biological reactions in the cell
◦ Peripheral (surface) → cell to cell interactions
◦ Transmembrane (integral) →span the entire lipid
bilayer, transport channels (passive and active
transport)
