Title: Bonding and properties
Purpose:
The purpose is to study the infrared spectra and physical properties of molecules to
determine what kinds of intra- molecular bonds are present within molecules and what kinds
of inter-molecular bonds are present between the molecules.
Procedure
Data/Results/Calculations
Water Solubility
Potassium Chloride (ionic substance) Potassium chloride- forms strong bonds with water
1. Add Potassium chloride into a test tube with water. molecules.
2. Observe the solid substance disappear as the test Result: Potassium Chloride is soluble in water which
tube is shaken and interact. indicates that it is either ionic polar or hydrogen
3. Record finding. bonding compound.
-Non polar molecules will NOT dissolve in water -
Pentane We can determine polar or non polar based on the
1. Add a liquid layer of pentane to a test tube with boiling point.
water.
2. Test tube is shaken and observe. Pentane
3. Record finding. - you dont see a solid bc pentane is liquid; BUT there
is a layer of liquid on top of the water Result:
N-Propal Chloride Pentane is not water soluble so it must be nonpolar.
1. Add a liquid layer of N-Propal Chloride in a test
tube with water. 2. Shake the test tube and N-Propal Chloride
observe. Results: Did NOT dissolve in water so that indicates it
3. Record finding. is non polar or not very polar.
Ethyl Alcohol Ethyl alcohol it dissolves; no layer
1. Add ethyl alcohol into a test tube with water. on top or bottom.
2. Shake the test tube and observe.
3. Record finding.
