Abstract
The chemical elements Hg, Pb, Zn and Cr are known as heavy metals and are considered
a threat to public health because they generate neurological disorders, respiratory system
disorders and nephrotoxicity. In Colombia, the exact number of sites contaminated with
heavy metals because of anthropic activities that in many cases contaminate the region’s
water sources is unknown. In this article, the concentration of heavy metals was evalu-
ated in two species of fish Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum (striped catfish) and Prochilodus
magdalenae (Bocachico) commercialized in the city of Bogotá. The concentration of
metals in the dorsal muscle and in the gills was determined by their constant exposure to
water. The samples were subjected to acid digestion and the soluble metals were quanti-
fied by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results show us the concentrations of
heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Zn and Cr) bioaccumulated in the gills and in the dorsal muscle
of the two species is lower than the limits established as safe by the World Organization
of the Health for human consumption.
Keywords: bioaccumulation, biomagnification, food chain, galls, muscle tissue,
pollution.
