(OD) Doctors of Optometry - ANSWER-Also known as "Optometrists," they are
concerned with vision defects and acuity. They prescribe correctional lenses and optical
aids as needed. They have a minimum education requirement of seven years.
Acute Care Centers (ACC) - ANSWER-offer critical care & emergency trauma
Ambulatory care centers; outpatient; same day surgery centers - ANSWER-a variety of
facilities that are available to patients who are mobile and not bedridden (e.g. rehab,
pain management, sleep centers, urgent care, surgical, dialysis, women's health, mobile
health centers...)
Board of directors - ANSWER-follows the direction of the administrators and assists
them in maintaining and managing the hospital.
CDC - ANSWER-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP) - ANSWER-an advanced degree Registered Nurse
who has vast clinical experience. These professionals provide patient care similar to
that of a PA, and can diagnose and prescribe medication. The core concern of the CNP
is the patient's condition, including the effects of the illness on the patient as well as on
the family. CNPs are allowed to practice independently in some states.
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) - ANSWER-an advanced degree
Registered Nurse
who administers anesthesia to surgical patients. They may work independently or under
the
supervision of an operating physician, surgeon, or anesthesiologist.
Chief of staff - ANSWER-assists in the management and organization of the facility, as
well as in the credentialing process of the facility's medical professionals
CLIA - ANSWER-Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments
Community Hospitals - ANSWER-offer acute and/or sub-acute care in rural areas
Corporation - ANSWER-regulated by statutes of the state, and receive income and tax
advantages.
County and City Hospitals - ANSWER-offer acute and/or sub-acute care in county and
city areas

Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (DMS); Sonographer; Ultrasound Technician -
ANSWER-uses machinery that capture images of a patient's internal structures through
the means
of ultrasonic waves as ordered by a physician.
Doctor of Dental Medicine and (DDS) Doctor of Dental Surgery (DMD) - ANSWER-Both
DMDs and DDSs treat teeth, gums, and their surrounding tissues. The education is the
same for both doctors. Some dental schools award a DMD while others award a DDS;
the difference in the degrees is simply semantics.
Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) - ANSWER-DOs are MDs who have furthered their
education to focus on the musculoskeletal system. DOs focus on the unity of all body
parts and regard the body as an integrated whole. They concentrate on preventative
medicine and take a more holistic approach with the belief in the body's ability to heal
itself. DOs are more conservative in the use of
medications and surgeries than are MDs.
Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) - ANSWER-Sometimes referred to as "bone doctors," DCs
take a holistic approach to a patient's health and well-being through articular
adjustments and manipulations of the musculoskeletal system. Because the
musculoskeletal system is so closely related to the central nervous system, DCs focus
on adjusting bones when misaligned, to allow for better communication and energy flow
within the central nervous system. They do not write prescriptions
Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) - ANSWER-trained and educated in the care of
feet. They are
most concerned with pain caused by pressure points and weight-distribution in the feet,
ankles, and legs.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - ANSWER-provide basic life support in a pre-
hospital setting to individuals during medical emergencies. EMT training requirements
are 120 to 150 hours.
Encounter - ANSWER-Any visit to a healthcare facility
Group Practice - ANSWER-a medical management system in which three or more
licensed physicians share the collective income, expenses, facilities, equipment,
records, and personnel for the business
