Constant of Proportionality

The constant of proportionality is a concept that connects two quantities in a proportional
relationship. Imagine you have two variables, x and y, and they are connected in such a way
that y is always a constant multiple of x. This constant multiple is what we call the constant of
proportionality, and we usually represent it by the letter k.

To make it clearer, let's use an example. Suppose you are saving money, and for every
hour you work, you earn $10. Here, the amount of money you earn (y) is directly proportional to
the number of hours you work (x). The constant of proportionality, in this case, is 10 because
you earn 10 dollars for every hour you work. We can write this relationship as:
y=10x

This equation tells us that if you work 1 hour, you earn $10; if you work 2 hours, you earn
$20, and so on. The number 10 remains constant, showing the proportional relationship
between hours worked and money earned.

Another way to recognize a proportional relationship is by looking at a graph. If you plot
the values of x and y on a coordinate plane and the points form a straight line that passes
through the origin (the point where both x and y are 0), then x and y are proportional, and the
slope of that line is the constant of proportionality.

Understanding the constant of proportionality helps us make sense of how different
quantities are related. It’s a fundamental concept in math that applies to many real-life
situations, from calculating speed (distance proportional to time) to scaling recipes (ingredients
proportional to servings).

*a unit rate is another name for the constant of proportionality*
