COGSCI 115 Final (non cumulative) Lectures 11 CBT Techniques to 20 Realizing Goals [11] Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - ANS-focus on maladaptive thinking - many different subtypes of CBT (psychotherapeutic techniques) Aims: - minimize negative and self-defeating thoughts - cultivate positive and goal-consistent thoughts [11] What do newer variants of CBT focus more on? - ANS-changing one's relationship to maladaptive thinking [11] Cognitive Reappraisal of Emotion - ANS-CBT technique used to identify and change the way situations, experiences, events, and/or emotions are viewed in order to change their affective impact - standard technique used in CBT (evidence based) - large number of studies support effectiveness in increasing positive emotions and reducing negative emotions [11] Cognitive Reappraisal of Emotion Study - ANS-Tugade & Fredrickson (2004) - participants must prepare an impromptu speech that is evaluated by others (determining their academic and social successes) - cognitive reappraisal condition - participants were hyped up for task (thought task as a challenge to overcome) Results: - cognitive reappraisal participants had shorter durations of cardiovascular reactivity and greater experiences of positive emotions
