Course Outline: BIOL 112 - Biology of the Cell

Course Overview: This course delves into the fundamentals of cellular and molecular
biology using bacterial and eukaryotic examples. Students will explore the intricate
processes of replication, transcription, translation, and energy transformation in cells, as well
as the structure and function of biomolecules and organelles. The course will equip students
with both theoretical knowledge and practical problem-solving skills in the context of cellular
biology.

Course Format:
Lecture-based with interactive in-class activities.

Credits:
3

Prerequisites:
One of CHEM 12, CHEM 100, CHEM 111 and one of BIOL 11, BIOL 12, BIOL 111.

Course Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

● Understand and describe the cellular machinery involved in replication, transcription,
translation, and energy transformation.
● Analyse the structure-function relationships of biomolecules (proteins, nucleic acids,
lipids, carbohydrates) and their roles within the cell.
● Outline the biochemical processes and thermodynamic principles behind cellular
energy generation and the Calvin cycle.
● Collaborate effectively in small groups to discuss and solve cellular biology problems.
● Interpret and draw conclusions from descriptive or graphical data related to cellular
biology.
● Communicate cellular biology concepts clearly in written form.
● Appreciate the complexity of the biochemical pathways that sustain life.
