Well-structured GGH3708 PORTFOLIO (ANSWERS) Semester 2 2024 - DISTINCTION GUARANTEED. (DETAILED ANSWERS - DISTINCTION GUARANTEED!)..... Part 1: "Raising awareness on any environmental problem of your choosing" Part 1 of your portfolio should be based on the environmental problem you identified in Assignment 03. You can, however, change your environmental problem to be addressed if the feedback in Assignment 04 recommends that you do so. Please note that this component of the portfolio should not exceed 5000 words (including references) and must follow the GGH3708 Essay Style Sheet. Therefore, you must identify an environmental problem and develop a concrete plan and list of actions to address it. You must then implement the plan and demonstrate, using evidence (e.g. photographs), that you actually addressed the environmental problem which you identified. Doing this will enable you to develop your own sense of value, awareness and responsibility for the environment. Thus, the portfolio should entice you to become an "active citizen" to help address an environmental problem in your community. In terms of Part 1 of the written portfolio submission, I just want to stress that we're not looking for general discussions on global warming, deforestation, air pollution, water pollution, acid mine drainage, human overpopulation, etc. Neither are we interested in service delivery issues or health and safety issues at work or in the environment in which you live. In other words for Part 1 you are required to identify an environmental problem from your own context. This could be an environmental problem that you have identified at work, in your personal life or in a chosen context. The prescribed book provides a lot of background information that you must use but you are also encouraged to use other sources of information. Remember a good structure is key to presenting your answer. We want to see students getting their hands "dirty" to address environmental problems. Let me give you an example of something that would be considered appropriate. You work as a prison guard at a correctional facility in South Africa. Whilst working at the prison you realise that the prisoners throwaway a lot of potentially recyclable material - this would link to and illustrate an environmental problem; namely pollution. As such you set up educational sessions at the prison to educate the prisoners about the benefits of recycling, why pollution is bad for the environment, etc. This would represent the first component of a relevant environmental awareness and responsibility plan. As a second component, you then approach management to supply different bins to allow prisoners and staff to sort their rubbish and then when the rubbish is collected, the recyclable material is taken to the relevant recycling depots. This is just one example of what could be done in a specific context. Again, you must identify an environmental problem and develop a concrete plan and list of actions to address it. You must then implement the plan and demonstrate, using evidence, that you actually addressed the environmental problem which you identified. Part 2: Formulation of your own "Declaration of Environmental Awareness and Responsibility" After everything that you have done thus far and given the tools and knowledge you have acquired, you should be in a position where you are able to reflect and formulate your own declaration of environmental awareness and responsibility. A declaration (pledge) serves as a statement which you choose to abide by in your every day life in your different fields as a sign that you are aware of and responsible for the environment; your environment. Please note that this declaration (pledge) should not exceed 400 words (1-2 pages). In Part 2, we are not looking for a generic declaration of Environmental Awareness and Responsibility. For instance, you should not describe general aspects such as people should live more sustainability, pollute less, etc. In Part 2, you are required to present a Declaration of Environmental Awareness and Sustainability, again, in your own context. This means that you can't just highlight the need to recycle at home. You must develop a Declaration of Environmental Awareness and Responsibility for your work environment, personal life or chosen context in which you commit to several actions that will guide you to improve your environment, the way you live or preferably both.
