Chapter summaries:

Chapter one:
- Writing in his diary in 1801 Lockwood describes his first days as a tenant at
Thrushcross Grange, an isolated manor in thinly populated Yorkshire.
- He visits his landlord Mr Heathcliff, a surly dark man living in a manor called
Wuthering Heights.
- Heathcliff doesn’t seem to trust Lockwood.
- Although Lockwood doesn’t feel entirely welcome at Wuthering Heights he
volunteers to visit again.

Chapter two:
- Lockwood takes a walk to Wuthering Heights.
- He knocks but no one is in and Joseph, an old servant, calls out from the barn that
Heathcliff is not in.
- He is eventually let in by a rough-looking man and sits in the sitting room where he
finds a beautiful girl sitting by the fireplace.
- He presumes she is Heathcliff’s wife, and he tries to make conversation, she is
however rude.
- Lockwood is then corrected that she is his daughter-in-law.
- She is the widow of Heathcliff’s dead son.
- Lockwood is forced to leave through a blizzard with a lantern.
- Joseph assumes he is stealing the lantern and sets the dogs in him. Lockwood
becomes furious and curses the inhabitants of the house.
- His anger brings on a nosebleed and he is forced to stay at Wuthering Heights.

Chapter Three:
- Zillah leads Lockwood to a room that Heathcliff has forbidden to all visitors.
- He notices three names which have been scratched onto the ledge by the bed.
- He also finds a diary written around twenty-five years earlier
- Apparently, the diary belonged to Catherine Earnshaw and reads an entry which
describes a day at weathering heights where her cruel brother Hindley forces her and
Heathcliff to endure Joseph’s tedious sermons.
- Catherine and Heathcliff seem very close and Hindley seems to hate Heathcliff.
- Half asleep Lockwood attempts to break off a branch by tapping on a window but
instead of finding a branch, he finds a ghostly hand which seizes his own and a voice
sobbing the name Catherine demanding to be let in.
- Heathcliff runs into the room and curses Lockwood as he flees the room.
- There are no signs that the ghost was ever at the window.

Chapter Four:
- Lockwood becomes lonely and bids his housekeeper to tell him the history of the
people at Wuthering Heights.
- Heathcliffe is an orphan who was brought into the family.
- Catherine and Heathcliffe has a close relationship but Hindley resents him.
- M Earnshaw comes to love him and Mrs. Earnshaw distrusts him.
- When mrs Earnshaw dies Hindley is left without an ally.

, Chapter five:
- Time passes and Mr Earnshaw grows frail and weak.
- 2Hindley is sent to college due the conflict between him and Heathcliffe.
- Mr Earnshaw dies and Hindley is now the master of wuthering heights when he
returns.

Chapter Six:
- Hindley and his new wife return to wuthering heights.
- He declares Heathcliff will now not be allowed an education and instead will spend
his days working in the fields like a common labourer
- Catherine is bitten by a dog whilst out playing with Heathcliffe and stays at the
Linton’s.
- Hindley is furious and humiliated and tells Heathcliffe that he may have no further
contact with Catherine.

Chapter seven:
- Mrs linton determines to transform the girl into a young lady and spends her time
educating Catherine in manners and social graces.
- The linton children come to dinner at wuthering heights.
- Mr and mrs linton allowed their children to attend as long as Heathcliffe is kept away
from them.
- Heathcliffe confides to Nelly that he intends to seek revenge on Hindley.

Chapter eight:
- Story skips ahead several months after the Linton’s visit.
- France gives birth but dies shortly afterwards.
- Hindley takes no interest in the child.
- Hindley starts to decline.
- Edgar is appalled by Catherine’s behaviour when she slaps the servant.
- Catherine and Edgar hav e confessed their love for one another.

Chapter nine:
- Catherine announces her marriage to Edgar
- Heathcliffe leaves wuthering heights
- Catherine spends the night outdoors and catches a fever.
- Mr and Mrs Linton become infected and die.
- Nelly moves to Thrushcross Grange leaving Hareton in the care of his father and
Joseph.

Chapter ten:
- Lockwood writes in his diary how he has become sick of his time at wuthering
heights.
- Heathcliffe spends three years away and in this time acquires his wealth.
- He returns and Catherine is happy
- Their affection for each other makes Edgar jealous.
- Isabella begins to fall in love with Heathcliff.
- Nelly suspects Heathcliff harbours wicked and vengeful motives.

Chapter Eleven:
- Hareton throws stones at Nelly and curses her.
