Investigation Two
Section 1
Guided Question: Does a ball rolling on an incline have the same acceleration on the way up as
it does on the way down?
Concept: Acceleration is the rate at which an object changes velocity or speed. Acceleration can
change (an object slowing down or speeding up) or stay constant. The goal of this experiment
was to compare the acceleration of a ball as it rolls up an incline and then down an incline.
Gravity will be acting upon the ball as it rolls in both directions. In this experiment, the forces of
friction and wind resistance are ignored.
Section 2
Experiment Procedure:
▪ Each group member will measure a different angle to reduce uncertainty, angles were
assigned during lab meeting.
▪ Prop a cutting board up against a wall at approximate angle as decided by group members
(30, 45 or 60 degrees).
▪ Place expanded measuring tape or ruler on cutting board to measure length and act as a
point of reference. Leave in place for the entirety of experiment.
▪ Place the lab kit provided marble at the top of the incline and let roll down. Mass of
Marble: 22.38 grams
▪ Record with phone/device above (looking down) on experiment set up.
▪ End recording when marble has stopped rolling or landed off the incline.
▪ To record marble going up the incline, place marble to the bottom of the cutting board.
▪ Give a push to the marble, causing it to roll upwards
▪ Record with phone/device above (looking down) on experiment set up.
▪ End recording when marble has stopped rolling, landed off the incline or beings to roll
downwards.
▪ Upload videos to data Tracker to find speed and acceleration
▪ Transfer data to Excel
▪ Use Data Analysis in Excel to find acceleration.
▪ Compare data and then find acceleration, velocity, linear regression, and uncertainty
