TITLE: The Features and Effects of Neo-liberalism in Post-Apartheid South Africa
INTRODUCTION:
Neo-liberalism, a political and economic ideology that emerged in the 1970s, emphasizes free
markets, minimal state intervention, privatization, deregulation, and individual entrepreneurship. It
has become a cornerstone of modern capitalism and has had a profound influence on global
economies, including that of South Africa. The implementation of neo-liberal policies in the post-
apartheid era has significantly shaped South Africa’s economic and political landscape, contributing
to issues such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment. In this essay, I will explore the main
features of neo-liberalism and how these policies have impacted post-apartheid South Africa,
particularly in the context of economic inequality and socio-political consequences.
Main Features of Neo-liberalism
Neo-liberalism is defined by a set of principles that advocate for limited government intervention in
the economy. Its primary focus is on the belief that free markets, when left to operate without
interference, are the most efficient mechanisms for resource allocation and economic growth. Some
of the main features of neo-liberalism include, Privatization, Deregulation, Market Liberalization,
