PHIL 447N Week 5 Course Project; Proposal & Outline (Human Eating Habits) – Download To Score An A+ Self-Regulation Self-regulation is a very wide term. It has a lot of components. Every author has his unique definition of self-regulation. I took my time and looked at various definitions and meanings of the term self-regulation. After doing my research, I think that self-regulation can have different meanings for different people. According to me, self-regulation is having a close look at your perception, thought process and the actions you take. You compare your actions with your results and figure out what went wrong, and you work on it to make yourself better. System 1 and system 2 System 1 and system 2 are the basics of behavioral science. They give a general idea of how we think. System 1 is also known as fast learning. It is based on intuition and information through which we perceive the world around us. An example of system 1 thinking would be me going to my work. I don't need abstract thinking to go to my work as I have learned this behavior. All the memories, information and perception are working as a team, and I don't have to put much effort into it. System 2 thinking is also known as slow thinking. Here we have to pay attention and think before taking any action. It requires critical reasoning and abstract thinking. An example of system 2 thinking would be giving IV medication to the patient. For this, I need to calculate the dose of the drug according to the patient’s weight. Then I have to identify any possible drug interactions with the medication the patient is already taking. Heuristics Heuristic can be defined in many ways. There are a lots of definitions of the term ‘heuristic’, but they all have same basic principle. Heuristic means using shortcut methods to solve a problem. These methods may or may not result in an optimal outcome. For example: When an unconscious patient comes into the hospital, a doctor orders CT scan or an MRI. This decision is based on the intuition that patient might be unconscious due to a stroke or internal head injury due to a fall. Dominance Structuring According to me, dominance structuring reflects the thought process of a person. In this the person sticks to the decision he made. He is not willing to alter or make changes in his decision. He only thinks about the benefits or plus points of decision and does not pay attention to the demerits or drawbacks of the decision he has made. I believe dominance structuring can be a hindrance to critical thinking because, failure to understand one’s own opinion or choice can hold them back from understanding the outcome of their own decision. Cognitive Bias In my opinion, better understanding of data and facts can break our cyclical thinking according to system 1 and prevent it from harming our development and growth. It is just focusing on our acquired knowledge, skills and memories to acquire system 2 thinking for our growth and development. Reference: Facione, P., & Gittens, C. A. (201).
