Doing Gender, Doing Heteronormativity

- Our perpetuation of gender roles as gendered beings
- The nature of our being based off of gendered actions
- Gendered behavior is a social phenomena not a property of humans

- Is to appease the societal idea of what gender means and how gender should
present itself

- Sex is an assumption based on perfermace outside of gendered perceptions
➢ Sex: A determination made through the application of socially agreed upon ideas of
genitalia
➢ Sex Category : Application of sex criteria in ebery day life, sustained through people
seeing other people and deciding what sex they are (binary system of appearance)
➢ Gender: Activity of managing situational conduct, something that we do in line with our
gendered categorization

- Gender hierarchy and inequality flows from doing gender and the hierarchy between
heteroseduaoity and homosexuality
- Object of the study is cis gender when in an atmosphere with transgender individuals
and how the interplay between gender and sexuality
- Look at two case studies in connection with how cisgendered colleagues reacted to a
transman co-worker
- Looks at news-reporting of transwomen murdered by cis man
- If there is acceptance in the workplace, there is less physical violence BUT there is still a
gendered and heteronaornative approach to understanding.
- In public places, the genitalia of someone is of less importance and illicit less violent of a
response in comparison to private places and when there are sexualized interactions
(homophobia as a driving force for violence)
- Self identity is threatened by fear of homosexual interaction “gender is interactional”
- Cis men respond with violence, because violence is a masculine trait but women using
violence are doing their gender “wrong” HETERONORMATIVE TACTICS
