Egan's Fundamentals of Respiratory Care Chapter 9
1.Accessory Muscles of Ventilation: Occurs when the muscles of the
neck, back, abdomen assist the diaphragm and external and internal
intercostal muscles in respiration, especially in some breathing
disorders or in exercise.
2.acinus: any small sac-like structure particularly that found inside of a
gland.
3.alae: lateral surfaces of the external nose; the alae may flare out
during exercise
4.alveolar-capillary membrane: a thin tissue barrier through which
gases are exchanged between the alveolar air and the blood of the
pulmonary capillaries
5.alveolar period: the development of mature alveoli accompanied by
capillary proliferation around their outside wall

, 6.alveoli: small outpouching of walls of alveolar space through which gas
exchange between alveolar air and pulmonary capillary blood occurs.
7.anatomic dead space: Airways and lung tissue that do not
participate in gas exchange.
8.Angle of Louis: a slightly oblique angle where the manubrium
articulates with the body of the sternum
9.anterior nares: openings of the nose; nostrils
10.apexes: upper most regions
11.canals of Lambert: openings that connect alveoli with the secondary
respirato- ry bronchioles
12.canalicular stage: in fetal development this stage begins at week
16 and continues until week 26
13.carina: bifurcation of the trachea into the right and left mainstem
bronchi
