Accountability,As a nurse you are accountable for your actions
and for reporting the improper actions of others.
Advanced practice nursing (APN),A licensed registered nurse
who resides in the state and holds a master's degree or higher
in a nursing specialty and has national specialty certification as
a nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, or
clinical nurse specialist. The four recognized categories are
Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse Midwife, and
Nurse Practitioner.
Americans with Disabilities Act,1990. Passed to end
discrimination against qualified persons with disabilities by
removing barriers that prevent them from enjoying the same
opportunities as individuals without disabilities. Specifically in
relation to health care facilities, reasonable accommodations
for patients (and family members) with sensory disabilities
, (such as vision and hearing impairment) must be made
available to provide appropriate patients and family education.
ANCC,Agency that conducts certification examinations and
certifies advanced practice nurses.
APN,Legal title for nurses prepared by education and
competence to perform independent practice.
Assault,An act causing a person to fear that he/she will be
touched without consent. example: yelling profanity and
waving a knife at someone.
Autonomy,The ethical principle that views persons as self-
determining agents who are entitled to determine their own
destinies.
Battery,Unauthorized or actual harmful or offensive touching of
a person.
Beneficence,Recognize the good in a situation.
Betty Neuman,Systems model: Wellness-illness continuum;
promotes the nurse as the agent in assisting the client in
adapting to and therefore reducing stressors; supports the
notion of prevention through appropriate intervention.
CCNE,Agency with responsibility for accrediting baccalaureate
and higher degree nursing programs.
